Mike - A good bet is to try Hydrophilic Interaction Chromatography (HILIC).
This is a variant of normal phase HPLC that you use with a partially aqueous
mobile phase and a very polar column. Isopropylthiogalactopyranoside won't
be well-retained in this mode unless you use a mobile phase with something
like 90 or 95% acetonitrile [the higher the conc. of organic solvent, the
better the retention]. With ordinary sugars, you'll run into solubility
problems at this level, but the alkyl group of IPTG should serve to keep this
compound in solution. Try running isocratically with detection at 205 nm.
