From my experience, accountibility is necessary for the mass spec to
operate properly. Also, don't forget your recycling schedules. You can
always train operators, but keep them under a scheduler and make them
sign in for usage.

Although several vendors are talking about user friendly systems, they
are still mass specs that have a number of working parameters that
need to be controled. You can always trade analyses as favours!

We are finally getting serious about purchasing a mass spec. Without
mentioning
names we are pretty much agreed on what is touted as "walk up" instrument. The
question then arises, given the ease of use, does the instrument belong in the
core facility or should it be in a common instrument room where everyone has
access to it? In the case of the common room there would be "someone" who is
nominally in charge of the instrument.

I have to confess that the thought of trying to recover costs to pay for the
service contract makes me think twice about having it here in the core.
However
I worry that the instrument could be turned to junk in a relatively short time
with poorly supervised access.

Any thoughts, opinions, or experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
