Frances, 4 years ago I retired our 430A in favor of a symphony. In my lab,
the symphony has been a real workhorse. We're currently doing about 50-75
peptides per month, at variable scales. If you want to increase your
throughput then I would highly suggest the symphony. The instrument is
very easy to operate, our costs have come down considerably since we can
buy our reagents in bulk. I can't imaging the cost of doing all of these
on the 430A. Service-wise, the instrument has been quite reliable, most of
the problems are a result of SMC valves which go bad, but these are quite
easy to replace. One of the best features of the instrument is the
on-instrument cleavage were you get a tube with your peptide filtered away
from the resin, ready to precipitate..it's great! I can honestly say that
the symphony is one of the most reliable instruments we run here.
