You might check out a paper I wrote a couple of years ago: Miller & Powell, "A
Quantitative comparison of DNA sequence assembly programs", in J. Comp. Biol. 1
(4): 257-69 (1994). It demonstrates significant differences in the quality and
robustness of 11 different programs available to us at the time.
