Is your sample ever exposed to light? Fluorescein can photo-bleach
quite readily; common fluorescent light fixtures offer plenty of energy
to do this. The environment around the dye seems to affect the rate of
bleaching. Possibly the molecule to which the dye is attached can
transfer energy to the fluorescein and speed up this process.
