MANAGING BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH LABS
Release Date: August 5, 1998
Office of Research Integrity
The first national Conference on the Management of Biomedical Research
Laboratories will be held October 1-3 at the University of Arizona,
co-sponsored
by the University and the Office of Research Integrity (ORI), to give veteran,
new and prospective laboratory directors, research administrators, postdocs,
and
graduate students an opportunity to exchange views on a subject that is vital
to
the advancement of biomedical science, the career of scientists, and research
integrity. Seven topics will be addressed during the conference--the role of
laboratory director, mentoring, managing the research agenda, quality control,
data management, collaborative research, and assigning credit for
productivity.
Because of its exploratory nature, the conference format has been designed to
encourage an exchange of views. Presentations on each topic will be followed
by
extended open discussion and summary sessions. Sixteen researchers or
research
administrators from 15 institutions in 12 states will make presentations.
"Learning to be a lab director appears to be largely a trial and error
experience," Chris Pascal, ORI Acting Director, said. "There is little formal
training, guidance, or technical assistance available." ORI expects the
conference to provide the basis for developing educational modules, a
handbook,
a course, or a training workshop. A conference banquet will be held at the
White
Stallion Ranch, a scenic guest ranch outside of Tucson. The agenda and
speakers
are listed at: http://conferences.arizona.edu/biomedlab98. Registration is
$295
before September 1; $350 after September 1. Full time students, $150.
