Lots of core labs are increasing their volume by outsourcing oligos. We
produce 200 nanomole desalted oligos in 24 hours to be delivered the second
day, and we only charge area customers 89 cents per base. Some customers have
special priveleges, such as a courier. College accounts in a 50-mile radius
get daily deliveries, so even the cartridge- and HPLC- purified oligos are
getting to endusers faster than they expect. The core labs I'm dealing with
pay a slightly better price than that, and after they mark the oligos up a few
cents they can get huge volumes to customers faster. University Core Labs are
a bit sheltered from the of service pressure we get from our customers, but
they do give the school some nominal independence.
