One danger to allergic reaction to activator exposure may be the modification of
self proteins and thereby forming autoantibodies. Greatest care should be used
in weighing dry activator and weigh should be avoided if possible. Lab coat,
gloves, mask and eye protection should ALWAYS be used (even when weight or
transferring in the hood). After weighing, the gloves should be rinsed off and
hands washed.

The DMF and peperidine accentuated the problem are likely because of increased
absorption through the skin. I use ABI's suggestion on buying in bottles that
don't have to be split or weighed out. Just add the solvent directly into the
bottle without weight the material out. Anything that will happen with HBTU, is
likely to be reproduced with EDC, DCC, etc.

What's a few dollars of chemicals when compared to your health and the your
personnel.

Subject: Peptide Synthesis/ HBTU allergic reaction.

Dear Steve: I get a mild rash when I come in direct contact with HBTU, but
I have thankfully not developed further reactions. I normally scrub
exposed skin areas down and rinse off balances etc after weighing HBTU.
Weighing HBTU in a hood might make life more comfortable for the person
with the allergic response. I also think that both DMF and piperidine
accentuate this problem, although my n=1. Reagrds, Gautam
