MASS SPECTROMETRIST position: The Protein Structure Lab and Facility for
Advanced Instrumentation at the University of California, Davis is seeking
a Mass Spectrometry Specialist for a full time non-tenured rank position
beginning March 1999. The UC Davis facility currently operates a Finnigan
LCQ ion trap, Bruker Biflex III MALDI/TOF, a double sector instrument, an
electrospray-quadrupole (VG Bio-Q) and a GC/MS instrument. Additional ESI
and MALDI/TOF instruments have recently funded by the campus. Duties of the
appointee will include (1)daily operation, maintenance and repair of mass
spectrometers, (2) training of and consultation with facility users
(graduate student, research staff and faculty), (3) application of advanced
mass spectrometry techniques for the structural elucidation of biological
molecules, and (4) identification of proteins by peptide mass mapping. The
primary function of the individual will be to provide non-collaborative
Mass. spectrometric services. However, the candidate should also have a
desire to participate in mutually rewarding research projects. There will
be opportunities to participate in collaborative research projects
requiring consultation extending well beyond that of a normal service
function.

Minimum requirements includes Ph.D. or M.S. in physical sciences or closely
related discipline and extensive experiences in mass spectrometry.
Candidates who have experience in protein/peptide separation and
identification by mass spectrometry are preferred. The appointee will work
closely with an experienced conventional protein analysis team and will be
consulting on structural biology and proteomics issues. This position will
