There have been some recent comments regarding the quality of the
packaging of the R3 reagent (TFA) from Hewlett Packard for use with the
HP Protein Sequencing Systems.

We have identified the cause of the loose cap on the TFA bottle and this
problem has been resolved. We believe this is an isolated incident,
since our previous history with this reagent has been extremely good.

However, we need to remind all our customers that the appropriate
precautions should be observed when dealing with this and any other
reagent supplied by Hewlett-Packard. In order to conform with regulatory
shipping standards, we must ship the product in a can. Open the can and
containers upon receipt in a well ventilated fume hood. Also, please
wear safety eyeglasses, chemical resistant gloves and a lab coat to
protect yourself when handling materials. When opening the bottle,
place the bottom on a hard surface, secure the neck by applying pressure
down on the bottle, and use the TFA Cap tool for loosening the cap.

We would like to remind you that we do supply a special tool for
releasing the TFA bottle caps to minimize potential dangers in handling
this reagent. Please review our technical note, TFA Bottle CAP Remover
(Publication number 5966-2768E) that is distributed with every Sequencer
system. If you do not have a copy or have mislaid it, you can view and
print this document using the World Wide Web address
http:\\chem.external.hp.com\scripts\cag_litsearch.asp. This will lead
you to our CAG search page. Select "Bioscience" for Product Group and
"Technical Note" for Publication Type and click on "Search". Locate the
appropriate technical note under "T".

We hope this will help answer some of the questions that have been asked
in this forum. If you should also receive a leaky bottle of R3, please
report it to me immediately. Also, if you should have further questions
or problems, please do not hesitate to contact me at (650) 857-3708.
