Are the scanners that you are looking at designed for use in
transmissive mode rather than relective mode? Keep in mind that
you need to scan through the gel.

We are quite happy with the BioRad GS-700, although it is overly
expensive. It comes with BioRad's Quantity One software for gel image
acquisition and export as a TIFF file for Melanie.

Consider also that you want a scanner with a sealed glass plate
on which can put wet gels.
