Analytical Development Scientist I

Job description

Xoma Corporation is involved in multiple clinical trials using novel
approaches to treat infections, infectious complications and immunologic
disorders. As a staff scientist in the Pharmaceutical Development group,
you will have the opportunity to develop state of the art analytical methods
for new recombinant technology products including products based on
bactericidal-permeability-increasing protein (BPI), as well as humanized
antibody-based products. As a part of the larger Technical Development
department, you will be involved in aspects of preclinical development,
manufacturing, and Quality Control. Your job will be to keep abreast of
current developments in our preclinical group and investigate scientific
issues on the critical path to developing clinical and commercial
biopharmaceuticals. You will be conducting experiments in the areas of
protein characterization, elucidation of protein degradation mechanisms and
purification of protein variants. As the outside technical resource for
Quality Control, you will devise and support analytical assays for product
release. You will have the opportunity to be part of the development of
formulations for new indications, and transfer new methodologies to
manufacturing and QC.

The Scientist I has responsibility for analytical method development and
investigation of nonconformity's related to manufacturing deviations and/or
analytical problems in Quality Control. The individual designs and conducts
experiments and performs all analytical methods in the laboratory. Results
are documented and communicated in written reports. Knowledge of GMP/GLP
requirements and experience in a GMP-regulated laboratory or production
environment is necessary. This position requires experience in all primary
areas of protein chemistry, including amino acid sequencing, HPLC, mass
spectrometry, and protein purification. Knowledge of immunochemical
techniques, spectroscopy, GC, FTIR, and NMR are a plus. The successful
candidate will have effective written and oral skills. Requires a graduate
degree with 3+ years of experience, or a Bachelors degree with 5+ years of
experience.
