James-
Don't rule out a ThermoSeparations Products (formerly Spectra
Physics) P4000 with prep heads. We have one with their VW detector with 1
mm prep cell. Certainly for prep work you do NOT want more than a 3 mm
cell, and a 1 mm is better. The prep heads are PEEK, so the whole system
is "biocompatible". I believe it will deliver up to 30 ml/min, but we use
20 max on 1" OD columns. The pressure limitation with prep heads is 2,000
psi, but we are generally using 10 micrometer packings in prep
chromatography so this is no problem. The unit has performed reliably for
us and is easy to use.
