Not an old timer but perhaps a penchant for history. Yes it was used
briefly, but due to its stability was supplanted with the p-methyl and then
the p-methoxy analogs. If you go to the FMOC approach, Trt and Mmt are
reasonable replacements, as well as StBu, tBu, FMOC and Acm if you
don't mind an extra step or two to reach the thiol.
