Dear Gary,

Cys(Bz) was introduced into practice by Zervas et al in 1962 and was
mentioned as the most useful S-acyl protected derivative by Photaki, I. The
role of sulfur in amino acid protective group chemistry. In: Topics in
Sulfur Chemistry. Vol.1 (Senning, A., Ed.); G.Tieme: Stuttgart, 1976,
pp.111-183.
You may find a lot of relevant references together with experimental
details in this comprehensive review.

Regards
Igor
