Chuck: Years ago, Jim Sparrow gave me some LAP (Lipid Associated Peptide)
with various acyl chains on the N-termini. They all aggregated in RPC. In
our hands, hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) worked well. More
recently, hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) has been shown to
handle such compounds with ease. The high level of organic solvents used
precludes association of the acyl- chains which would lead to micelles or
aggregates in aqueous media. For an introduction to HHILIC, see J.
Chromatogr. 499 (1990) 177. For an example of HILIC of an integral membrane
protein, see Anal. Biochem. 215 (1993) 292.
