For a start, you could read papers and books by:
R.B. Merrifield, J.M. Stewart, M. Bodanszky, R.C. Sheppard, A.M. Felix,
G. Barany, S.B.H. Kent, D. Andreu, C. DiBello, M. Goodman, J. Tam,
E. Gross, J. Meienjofer, L. Carpino, H. Yajima, N. Fujii, S. Sakakibara,
W. DeGrado, E.T. Kaiser, V. DuVigneaud, V. Hruby, M. Lebl, etc., and the
references therein. This will give you at least some answers to your
questions, and give you leads as to where you can find others.
(Apologies to all those involved in peptide synthesis whom I have not=20
named; these were what I could come up with off the top of my head.)
