I don't know who your source was re. HP1100s being unreliable, but they're
very wrong! The 1100 in my lab has been working almost continuously for
nearly two years with virtually no problems, except those due to normal
wear and tear. My collegues within our institute also use the 1100s
(several of them!) without any hassles.
The choice eventually will be yours, of course, but we chose HP over either
Waters or Beckman. Not that I'm denegrating their machines - they all have
their place in the market - but for our use (quality control as well as
research) they've been very reliable.
Cheers,
Roger
