I wouldn't agree with your feedback on the reliability of the HP1100.
I've been using an HP1100 as part of their HP241 protein sequencer for
about a year now. The system is operated nearly 24 hrs a day, seven
days a week, and there haven't been any HPLC problems. In addition I
purchased another HP1100 for doing digest separations, AAA, and other
things. I've been using it for only 5 months now, but again there
have been no problems. As far as some comments others have made, I
haven't had any problems with the proportioning valves and I use some
pretty harsh solvents like THF. There is good real time display of
data on the computer screen to guide those of us collecting fractions
or peaks (at least with the VWD monitor). In fact the computer is
very impressive, the Kayak computer that comes with the 1100 is
extremely fast. The help menus now include very high quality video on
a CD which covers basic things like changing pump seals. There is no
real need for manuals.
I don't mean to sound like a paid whore for HP, but I've been happy
with the performance of their equipment. I do have an older Waters
system that is also very reliable, with good software. BUT if I were
to buy another system at this point, I would probably go with another
HP1100 (the new Waters equipment is too expensive). The only system
which I've heard people complain about reliability has been Beckmans.

I plan to buy a new HPLC system to be used primarily for
synthetic oligo purification. I've been looking at systems from
Beckman, Waters, and HP. I was wondering if anyone had any comments
(good or bad) about the equipment they are currently using.
I am particularly interested in feedback on the HP1100.
I was recently told that they are not reliable.
Thanks so much,
Mike
