>I wonder if there is an alternative place to send Savant's freezer
>(refrigeration trap) for repair.
>I found that the Savant's own service is hard to get and too long to wait.
As long as I am posting, may as well address this one. We sent our
Savant 4L trap purchased in 1989 back to the factory for repair in 1994.
They said the compressor had burned out. We were charged over $600. We
JUST had the trap quit working again last week. Before sending it back to
Savant, we called up the University refrigeration shop. They sent out a
couple of guys who opened it and found it "again burned up". However,
they showed me that the copper lines had NEVER been cut or furnished with a
fitting to recharge it with freon. Also, the fan had not been bolted in
properly by Savant and had come loose and was running into the condensor.
They checked a catalog and found they could buy a replacement
compressor and other parts for around $200! We may get a small labor
charge. This suggests to me that any competent refrigeration shop, even a
local one, may well be able to help you out. We don't have it back yet;
they have only had it a few days, but I am content to wait at this
difference in price.
