Dear Skip,
We have had the opposite experience with the Kloehn loader as Dr. Stelick. Far
from it being a paperweight, we use the loader twice a day, every day. It takes
15-20 minutes to load a 96 well gel using this loader. We have gone for months
without replacing the needles. In addition, you save some money on pipette
tips. We have considered but not tried using expandable 96 well format PCR
tubes (Sorenson BioScience). This would eliminate any expansion/contraction wear
on the Klohn loader needles because you could leave the loader in the expanded
position at all times.

Skip,
I purchased a kloehn loader when we had the 96 lane installed and
it makes a pretty good paperweight. The problems I have experienced with
hamilton loader for the 64 lane system were the same problems I experienced
with the kloehn loader. The needles are very fragile (I managed to break
12 in one day), and it is difficult to pick the samples out of the plate.
The best way I found to load is individually with a P2 pipettor. It takes
a little longer but it saves on the headaches.
