Silver staining stains proteins starting from the surface of the gel.
Reaction proceeds then inwards while the developer enters deeper
into the gel. The phenomenon is documented in an excellent article
about silver staining by J. Heukeshoeven & R. Dernick,
Electrophoresis 1985, vol 6 p.103-112 (see fig. 3, showing a cross
section of a stained gel)
