In addition to Rod Levine's comments, alpha-lactalbumin (Mr ~13kDa) offers
a quick way to determine where the peak elutes in your system The
material is cheap from Sigma (catalog L-6385) and has Cys at the 6th
position (EQLTKCEVFREL....). Just alkylate some by whatever protocol and
run it.
