David,
A long time ago (1982) we did some work with membrane proteins where we
swamped out the phospholipids solubilized with octyl glucoside--to track
how much residual og we had we introduced radiolabeled og at a low level
(I believe it was C14 labeled, commercially available). Worked well,
sensitivity that you require can be adjusted by how much radiolabel you
start with proportionate to the non-radiolabeled. Not chromatography, and
makes sample handling more difficult, but analysis was simple.
