Jim,

I've got to hand it to you for asking a good question so you can compile
great answers. I know your complaint of the abrf not willing to talk about
equipment comparisons was somewhat tongue in cheek but you're right. (We
want to keep the tee shirts coming). But maybe we just needed the salient
question now and again. Maybe the dam is broken and Len will get a large
response on his auto digestion systems. I hope so.
Orthogonal ESI/TOF: Can't add my 2 cents with direct experience but one
thing that your compilation touched on more than once was that when the
instrumentation is in the same ballpark then superior software gets the
sale. And it seemed true from the old school all the way to the new investor
in the technology. I am going to make a nice printout so I can hand it to
all vendors making high price tag analyzers that resolution is not the be
all and end all. (OK, it _is_ a good start). It's getting the data in a form
that one can convince the researcher that you're not making it all up. Our
lab is currrently testing a software package that just migrated to NT 4.0
from windows 3.1. Some dazzling changes but boy, the stuff they left out.
Sooner or later they will need to sell these instruments to wet bench
molecular biologists because all the MS gurus will be saturated and then we
might have decent software as a given.

I hope this thread continues, Paul

ps. Someone from the "old school" willing to bend your ear for 45 minutes?
Now who in the old school would be willing to do that? Irvine, hmmm...

I received three replies to my email concerning orthogonal ESI/TOF
machines with excellent comments and they are reprinted below (thanks to
the authors... ( the rest deleted because home browser mailer auto digested
it and I can't sit here all night deleting the RETURNS.)
