My vague memory is that phenanthroquinone worked quite well with guanidine as well as arginine, and gives a fluorescent product (green) as well - check out Yamada & Itairo BBA(1966) 130 : 538. You could use it as a spot test, but of course it will react with proteins as well as with free guanidine
