Dear Fellow ABRF members:

You are invited to participate in the ABRF Survey Committee "Biotechnology
Salary and Compensation Survey." The survey can be accessed and filled
out at the following web site address: http://128.138.143.10 (user name:
ABRF; password: salary99; if you have problems connecting, contact
old@ucsu.Colorado.EDU). IMPORTANT: Before you access the form, there is
information you will need to know ahead of time. In an effort to normalize
the salary data across different geographical regions, we will use the "Big
Mac" index, the cost of a Big Mac and a hamburger at McDonalds. If you
don't have this information at your fingertips, please try to acquire it
before beginning. Also note that survey participants will remain
anonymous.

The survey consists of two sections--Part 1 is to be filled out by all
members of the laboratory, regardless of their ABRF membership status. We
ask that you tell as many members of your immediate group, as well as
individuals in other service facilities, about this survey and encourage
their participation. Part 2 of the survey is to be filled out only by the
facility manager/director (but again is not limited to ABRF members). We
anticipate it will take between 20 and 30 minutes to complete the first
part of the survey, and only five to ten minutes for the second part. The
web site will be open for survey submissions until January 7, 2000. You
may be interested in results from an earlier ABRF salary and compensation
survey using data obtained in 1993; these results are available at
http://www.abrf.org/ABRFNews/1996/December1996/Compensation.html.

The purpose of the current survey is to see how different facility
positions compare in terms of salary, benefits, and responsibilities, and
to gauge the satisfaction of individuals with their roles and compensation.
The results should allow you and your co-workers to see how you measure up
with individuals doing related work, information that is useful when
entering into salary negotiations, or making salary determinations for
support staff. The accuracy of the survey is dependent on the number of
respondents, so your participation in this survey is important. Please
encourage your colleagues to participate as well. A preliminary report of
survey data and conclusions will be presented at the February ABRF meeting.

We hope that the information gathered will be of great interest and utility
to all members of core facilities. Thank you in advance for your
participation.

Sincerely,

Members of the ABRF Survey Committee:
Janice Bleibaum
Deb McMillen, Chair
Charles Nicolet
William Old
Katheryn Resing
Gautam Sarath
John Stults
