NHGRI Proposes Restructuring, Accepting Public Comments
The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has unveiled a proposed reorganization<http://lyris.newtarget.com/t/3419/15237/294/0/> that reflects its strategic plan released last year, emphasizing the translation of genomic information into better medical care (see February 11, 2011 AIRI Weekly Washington Report - see end of this e-mail).  The new structure would increase the institute's three components to seven, with four of the new divisions within the extramural research program.  The plan will be discussed at the February 13 meeting<http://lyris.newtarget.com/t/3419/15237/295/0/> of the National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research, and NHGRI is accepting comments on the proposed reorganization by email<mailto:NHGRIcomments@nih.gov>.

The reorganization would create four new divisions within the Division of Extramural Research: the Division of Genomic Science to oversee basic genomic research and technology development; the Division of Genomic Medicine to lead efforts to move genomic technologies and approaches into clinical applications and care; the Division of Genomics and Society to address societal issues relevant to genomics research and extend the NHGRI Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) program; and the Division of Extramural Operations to manage grantmaking operations, including the review of grant applications and grants management.  Additionally, two existing offices within the Office of the Director would be converted into the Division of Policy, Communications, and Education and the Division of Management.  The Division of Intramural Research would remain much the same as it is currently structured.

Process for Proposed Reorganization

Pursuant to the Public Health Service Act section 401(d)(4) as amended by the National Institutes of Health Reform Act of 2006<http://www.nih.gov/about/reauthorization/>, (42 USC sec. 281(d)(4)), NHGRI is holding a series of public meetings to present the proposed reorganization, to answer any related questions, and to receive feedback from interested individuals about the proposed new structure.

The first public meeting was held on:

  *   January 18, 2012. This was a "virtual meeting" conducted as a webinar and teleconference. An audio recording of of the meeting, with Powerpoint slides, is now available.

The next public meeting will be held on:
